DAY 1: Swimming with the Fish

Activity 1: Surfs Up! [4 points]

In New Zealand, we have many beautiful beaches and stunning waterfalls. One of the most spectacular waterfalls is called Kitekite and it is located in Piha, a small village west of Auckland. Tourists and locals flock to Piha during the summer season to enjoy the waterfall, the local beach, and the great surf. Have you ever tried surfing? Although I have never surfed many of my friends have and they absolutely love it. In fact, it is their favourite summer activity! What is yours?

My favourite summer activity is eating. I like eating because there is a lot of amazing food that I like to eat.

Activity 2: The Great Taupo Cycle Challenge [4 points]

Every year approximately 7500 people arrive in Taupo, New Zealand to compete in a one-day cycling race around Lake Taupo. The race route is 160 km in length. Participants can choose to compete in the full race or the half-race (80 km). Let’s imagine that you were given a free ticket to compete in the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge next year and you were able to bring three people with you like your ‘support crew.’ Who would you bring with you?

If it was me, I would choose my son, Aronui, as one of my supporters because he’s really funny and energetic. I think that he would make sure that I had a great time and that I spent the entire day laughing and smiling. I would also choose my sister, Leigh because she is very strong and fast. Thirdly, I would choose my co-leader, Hazel, because she is very organised and would make sure that we followed the trail and didn’t get lost!

On your blog, list the three people you would like to have on your Lake Taupo Cycle Race Support Crew. Tell us why you have chosen each person.

I would choose My friends Richie, Mathew and Aj. I chose These three people because they are all supportive, They all make me laugh and Lastly, they are all smart and they can solve big problems.

Activity 3: Something Smells Fishy…[10 points]

One of the longest and largest rivers in the world is called the Amazon River. It is located in South America and is approximately 6400 kilometres (km) long. That is four times longer than the entire country of New Zealand. Wow!

Scientists believe that there are over 3000 different kinds of fish that live in the Amazon River. Now, that is a lot of fish! To learn more about fish, we went online and found some really cool facts about fish.

For this activity, we are going to provide you with five sentences about fish. Some of them are true and some are them are not. It is your job to read these ‘facts’ and decide whether they are true or false.

On your blog, write out each fact and in CAPITAL LETTERS beside the fact, write the word ‘TRUE’ if it is a true factor ‘FALSE’ if it is not true.

True or False?

Fish Fact #1: The oldest known fish in the world is a 65-year-old Australian lungfish. TRUE. It was still alive and well at 65 years old.

Fish Fact #2: Sharks are the only fish that have eyelids. TRUE.

Fish Fact #3: Starfish are a type of fish. False. Starfishes are not classified as a fish because it does not have gills, scales, or fins.

Fish Fact #4: Fish communicate with each other by making low-pitched sounds (moans, hisses, etc) TRUE. Fish can also communicate with others by making other noises including grunts, chirps and pops

Fish Fact #5: Fish usually swim together in groups called ‘classes.’ FALSE. A group of fish is either called a Shoal or a School.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 1

Day 1: The Early Years (Late 1800s – 1919)

Activity 1: St Joseph’s Cathedral

At the turn of the century, there was a great deal of construction happening in New Zealand. Many of the new British settlers wanted to build homes and community meeting places, such as churches. One of the largest buildings to be constructed during this period was St Joseph’s Cathedral in Dunedin.

St Joseph’s Cathedral is just one of hundreds of beautiful cathedrals around the world.

Use your search engine to find a picture of another famous cathedral. Post a picture of the cathedral on your blog. Underneath the picture tell us: the name of the cathedral, where the cathedral is located, when it was built, and how long it took to build.

The cathedral i picked is the Winchester cathedral. The Winchester cathedral is located in Winchester, build in 1079 and it took 14 years to complete.

Activity 2: The Right to Vote

At the turn of the century, New Zealand elected its first ever government. Richard John Seddon served as the leader of the Liberal Party from 1893-1906. Prior to 1893, only men were legally allowed to vote. This all changed in the late 1800s when a woman named Kate Sheppard lead a suffragist movement in New Zealand calling for a change in law. Her hard work finally paid off when the Electoral Act was passed into law on 19 September 1893, giving women the right to vote. New Zealand was the first country to give all women the right to vote. There were still countries in the world (e.g. Saudi Arabia) who, until recently, did not allow women to vote.

On your blog tell us what you think about the fact that women were not allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia until 2015. Is it fair? Why or why not?

For me i think it is not fair because all of the votes come from the men and not the woman's. So that means all of the men wants to vote for a specific person while the women wants to vote for another person but at same time Some of the women wouldn't mind it because they might be too lazy to get up and go vote.

Bonus Activity: In Flanders Fields

As the new century dawned, New Zealanders settled into a period of relative calm. The calm lasted for about 15 years but came to a sudden end in 1914 when World War I erupted in Europe. The war lasted for almost five years and claimed the lives of 18,000 New Zealanders.

It also claimed the lives of thousands of men and women from countries around the world. Every year, we remember these brave men and women on ANZAC Day (25 April). Many people go to a special Anzac Day ceremony where they read a special poem that was written for the fallen soldiers. The poem is called ‘In Flanders Fields’ bay John McCrae.

It makes me feel very lucky to live in a beautiful, safe country like New Zealand. It also makes me feel sad for those who died in the war and for their families. I think that we are very lucky that they went to war and fought for our freedom. What do you think?

Reading This poem Made me curious and think "Why do people kill other people i meant Why don't they live in peace. Besides that, The poem is a awesome and a sad at the same time. Awesome because It has interesting words like quarrel and larks and its sad because Lots of people from New Zealand and Australia die during the war.
