Summer Learning Journey Week 4 Day 2

Day 2: A Decade of Sport

Activity 1: Chasing Great
Over the past 17 years New Zealand has experienced a number of sporting highlights,
perhaps none larger than the back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015.
In both competitions our national rugby team, the All Blacks, was captained by a man named
Richie McCaw. He is arguably one of the best rugby players of all time. A movie called Chasing
Great was recently created to document his incredible rugby career.

Please watch the trailer for Chasing Great and read about Richie McCaw online.
On your blog tell us three things that eyou learned about Richie that you did not
know beforehand. What else would you like to know about Richie?

3 thing i did not know about Richie McCaw.

  1. That he played 110 games as captain of All Blacks.
  2. He was a Pilot
  3. He dreamed of being a All Blacks player.
I would also like to know, When did he start playing rugby

Activity 2: Sporting Heroes
In 2015, a kiwi golfer named Lydia Ko became the youngest woman in the world
to reach the #1 ranking.  She was only 17 years old. Many people from here in
New Zealand and overseas really admire her and think of her as a modern-day
sporting hero. Who is your sporting hero? They can be a famous athlete, or
even a member of your family or community. It’s completely up to you.

On your blog tell us about your sporting hero. Who are they?
Why are they a hero? Include a photo of them in your blog post.

My sports Hero is Jason Taumalolo. He is my sports hero because
he is the captain on the Rugby League World Cup Tonga team.
He is a great player. He played for Rugby Since 2010.

My sporting hero is Lisa Carrington. She is an incredible rower, and last year she was awarded the prestigious  Lonsdale Cup for her amazing results in 2016! She spends hours training, and I think her commitment to her sport is inspiring.

  1. Kia ora Saia!

Great job with these activities! I didn't know that Richie McCaw was a pilot either, until I watched the movie. It's cool that he is pursuing that now that he has finished his rugby career. He even own his own flying business! I think he started playing rugby when he was really young - maybe 12... I was really inspired by the movie! Have you seen it yet?

Jason Taumalolo seems to be a popular sporting hero! It's not surprising due to his success in leading Tonga to a win. He sure is a great player. What would you want to ask him if you got the chance to meet him?

The tango sounds like a really exotic, fun dance! They make it look easy but I think it'd be hard to learn! Have you ever learnt a style of dance? I learnt rock n' roll dancing at school!

    Nicky :)
