Summer Learning Journey Week 3 Day 4

Day 4: Perms and Lycra (The 1980’s)

Activity 1: Hairy Maclary

One of the most famous children’s stories to ever come out of New Zealand, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, was written by a kiwi woman named Lynley Dodd. The book was originally published in 1983. It is now sold in dozens of countries around the world. It features a small dog named Hairy.

On your blog, use the following sentence starter from the original book to finish the story.

“Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy…”

To earn full points, your story should have, at least, 8-10 sentences.

What a Lovely Day¨ Said Hairy Maclary. A thought Poped up in his mind. Why don´t i stop by
Hercules Morse's house for a snack and play Some games he Thought. As he was walking ,he saw his other freinds, Bitzer Maloney and Bottomley Potts playing together in there backyard. when they saw hairy walking by, They ran towards him like a pack of cheaters. Where are you going said both Bitzer Maloney and Bottomley Potts. I'm going to Hercules Morse's house for a snack and some games. Can We come too .... Please Said Bitzer Maloney. Sure, you both can come. When they reached Hercules Morse's house, They saw him playing with a ball. They approaches him and said ¨Hey there Hercules Morse. are you allowed to play Outside¨ Said Hairy. Of Course Said Hercules Morse. What Game should we play first Said Hairy. ¨I know, We should play Tag¨. Some Hours Of playing it was time for Them to go home and rest. And they lived happy ever after

Activity 2: The Big ‘OE’

In the 1980s it became increasingly common for students to graduate from high school and take a year off to travel and experience the world. This year was often referred to as the ‘Big OE’ or ‘Big Overseas Experience.’ A number of kiwis headed to places like Australia and England to live and work before returning to New Zealand to finish their studies.

Imagine that you are a student in the 1980s and you’re about to graduate from high school. Where would you like to go on your big OE? On your blog tell us which country you would visit and give us three (3) reasons for your choice. Find some pictures on the internet of things that you would like to see and do in this country.

I’d love to go to Switzerland and spend lots of time in the mountains, learning how to ski!

I´d love to go to Australia to visit my uncle, Make friends with a kangaroos and meet Famous Actors such as Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth.

Bonus Activity: The 4 O’Clock News
jacinda.jpg

In 1982, Te Karere, a Māori-language news show premiered on television. It has continued to stream live on TV to this day. If you would like to watch it, turn on TV One at 3:55 p.m. each weekday and you will see it. The show is often hosted by a man named Scotty Morrison.

Imagine that you were Scotty Morrison and you were able to interview anyone you wanted. I would choose to interview our new prime minister, Jacinda Ardern. I’d love to know what it is like to be the Prime Minister.  What about you? Who would you choose to interview and why? What would you like to find out?

I would choose Russell Crowe to interview because he is a New Zealand actor but he acts in American movies

Question I would ask him: What got you in to Acting in movies, How long have you been acting and have you inspired any one to act in movies?.

BONUS POINTS: 10

  4. Hey Saia!

Fantastic job with these activities! I love that your story about Hairy Mclairy is a happy one where everyone lives happily ever after and that nothing bad happens to anyone! Have you read the Hairy Mclairy book?

Going to Australia on your Big OE is a great idea, there are so many cool things to see. I'm going to Sydney this year in April and I'm really excited. I might make friends with some kangaroo's, too! Whereabouts in Australia does your uncle live?

Those are great questions to ask Russell Crowe! It'd be interesting to know if he has inspired anyone to be an actor... I wonder if he has. What do you think?

    Nicky :)
